Coffee and Estrogen Balance in Men: What the Research Shows

Emerging research suggests that your daily coffee may do more than boost alertness—it may also play a role in supporting healthy oestrogen balance in men, particularly those experiencing features of oestrogen dominance.

Two key studies have contributed important insights:

1. Coffee and Hormone-Related Metabolism (Hang et al., 2017)

The 2017 Hang study found that regular coffee consumption favourably shifts metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers. While not focused exclusively on sex hormones, Their study showed a significant decrease in oestradiol and oestrone levels.  These improvements reflect enhanced liver and metabolic function, which are central to efficient oestrogen detoxification and clearance in men.

2. Coffee, SHBG, and Sex Hormone Regulation (Wedick et al., 2012)

This randomized controlled trial compared caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee and their effects on hormone regulation.

The study found:

  • Caffeinated coffee increased SHBG (sex hormone–binding globulin).

  • Higher SHBG is associated with healthier testosterone-to-oestradiol balance.

  • Decaf produced modest but still positive effects.

Why this matters :Raising SHBG helps lower the impact of free oestradiol. Men dealing with oestrogen dominance—whether due to age, lifestyle, or metabolic factors—may therefore benefit from regular coffee intake as part of a broader nutritional strategy.

A Simple Adjunct for Hormone Support

While coffee is not a standalone treatment, the evidence suggests it may be a useful dietary tool to complement lifestyle and nutrient-based approaches to improving oestrogen balance in males.
