NOT ALL LEG LENGTH DIFFERENCES ARE EQUAL

Think your legs are different lengths? You're not alone. But here's the catch: not all leg length differences are structural.

Many are functional - and that changes how you treat it.

Structural Leg Length Discrepancy

Born with it. Bones are different lengths. Usually permanent.

Functional Leg Length Discrepancy

Caused by muscular imbalance, pelvic tilt, or joint restriction. Totally fixable.

Treating a functional imbalance like a structural one can make things worse - and vice versa.

A proper assessment can help determine if you need:

  • Pelvic realignment

  • Muscle therapy

  • Heel lift

  • or just a better rehab plan

How can you tell if it's functional vs structural?

A proper assessment looks at posture, pelvic alignment and how your body compensates. We often test in multiple positions - lying down and standing - and check bony landmarks and if in doubt utilise imaging.

I was told I have a short leg. Should I wear a heel lift?

Only if it's a true structural difference! If your leg appears shorter due to a pelvic tilt or muscle imbalance, a heel lift might make it worse. That's why a full assessment is key before adding anything to your shoe.

Can this affect back or knee pain?

Absolutely. Leg length discrepancies - especially functional ones - often show up as low back pain, hip imbalance, or uneven knee loading. Addressing it early can help prevent long-term strain.

Is this common in runners or athletes?

Yes! We see it often in runners, lifters, and anyone who trains hard. Repetitive movement can expose even subtle leg length differences - especially functional ones. Getting it corrected can really improve performance and reduce injury risk.

Don't guess. Get Assessed. Call for your leg length evaluation today.
